1. Select a database.
The easiest way to find articles in magazines, journals and newspapers on a particular topic is to use a database. The University of Houston Libraries provides databases covering every academic discipline. To access these databases from home you will need your Cougar1Card. We recommend the following general databases to start your research:
To see the entire list of available databases, visit Find Articles (Electronic Databases).
2. Enter a search.
Combine keywords using AND to find articles on your topic. For example, to find articles on hackers and computer-security detection, you might search:
hackers and security and detection
All databases will list citations. In addition, some will provide abstracts or brief summaries of articles, while others will contain the full text of the article.
3. Locate the article.
If the full text is not available, you will need to locate the article in print in the library or in another database. Search for the journal title of the in the UH Library Catalog to identify its call number or the full text for that journal.
For example, if you were looking for the article:
Dutton, G., et. al., Denying service. Popular Science v. 256 no. 6 (June 2000) p. 46
You would need to search for the journal title Popular Science in the UH Library Catalog to find the database that has full text.
You could also find the print copy on the library shelf by writing down the call number. If looking for the print copy, check the link for Latest Received to find out whether the volume you need is in AVAILABLE in current journals or BOUND and shelved in the stacks with the books.
